I remember listening to the tape in the car with my father. I still have a copy of the tape and still works, although the heavyweight: listening, I finally have a copy on CD (Pitchfork).

Billy Joel Greatest Hits: Vol. 1-2 (2CD) $13.49 It’s one of the cruel ironies of music today that Billy Joel has been relegated to a kind of adult-contemporary hell, where his legacy is measured by soft-rock staples such as “Just the Way You Are,” “Piano Man,” and “New York State of Mind.” To be sure, well-crafted ballads are a part of his legacy, but they’re hardly the whole story, as this collection of his early and mid-period hits amply demo… |

The Stranger $4.61 This, pop superstar Joel’s breakout LP, came years after he first hit the charts with the novelty-ish “Piano Man.” In the meantime, the New York-based songwriter released two lackluster and stylistically confused platters that blunted interesting songs with a sound that was neither Elton mellow nor Elton attitude. Produced by Phil Ramone, The Stranger took those who had written Joel off as a one-h… |

The roots of Disney’s success with animation in the ’90s begins with this clever, energetic, atmospheric movie, which succeeds in capturing the grim world Dickens conjured. Lyricist Howard Ashman (The Li… |

Door to Door (2002) [VHS] $8.98 This earnest movie about a door-to-door salesman with cerebral palsy (based on the true story of Bill Porter) could have been cloyingly sweet, but a sense of humor and the clear, unpretentious performance of William H. Macy keep it from drowning in sentiment. Door to Door follows Porter from when he first gets his job (by convincing a skeptical sales manager to give him the worst route the co… |
