Charles Lloyd
Why celebrate together Andrew Lloyd Webber?

I mean as regards his new musical, "Phantom: Love Never Dies" by what Andrew Lloyd Webber does not use his original lyricist Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe? Why Glenn Slater is used?

I have no idea. I do not even understand the need to make a sequel to Phantom. This is unnecessary. I feel no lyricist who has used and no matter how you wrote this suite, which will never be as good, if not compared with the original phantom. Clearly, their largest and most successful production has been Phantom of the Opera and probably try to do something else equally successful but unfortunately make a sequel to ghost is not going to do for him, ha ha. He should be thinking about something completely new and different (which is what I see on Broadway), care or only the reputation it has and will be in the making of The Phantom of the Opera in a musical.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Vista Series)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Vista Series)

$10.23

This zany, eye-popping, knee-slapping landmark in combining animation with live-action ingeniously makes that uneasy combination itself (and the history of Hollywood) its subject. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is based on classic L.A. private-eye movies (and, specifically, Chinatown), with detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) investigating a case involving adultery, blackmail, murder, and a fiendi…

Dead Poets Society

Dead Poets Society

$6.15

Robin Williams stars as an English teacher who doesn’t fit into the conservative prep school where he teaches, but whose charisma and love of poetry inspires several boys to revive a secret society with a bohemian bent. The script is well meaning but a little trite, though director Peter Weir (The Truman Show) adds layers of emotional depth in scenes of conflict between the kids and adults. (A sub…

Lock Up [Blu-ray]

Lock Up [Blu-ray]

$14.22

With vanity projects like 1989’s schlocky Lock Up to his credit, it’s a wonder Sylvester Stallone survived to make some better movies in the ’90s. This is a brutal dose of macho action that Stallone squeezed in between Rambo III and Rocky V, and his fans didn’t seem to mind, so who’s to judge? It’s not as bad as Sly’s other 1989 disaster (Tango & Cash), but you’d have to be demented, drunk, or ha…

The Phantom of the Opera (2004 Movie Soundtrack)

$6.50

For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg’s Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher’s film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in sc…

The Phantom of the Opera (Original 1986 London Cast)

The Phantom of the Opera (Original 1986 London Cast)

$14.95

What’s left to be said about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera a decade after its premiere? That it’s maddeningly ubiquitous? A stitch-up of various themes shoplifted from the Italian operatic repertoire? A critic-proof crowd pleaser that’s probably being staged somewhere in the world as you read this? A megahit that will likely outlive Titanic in the pop-culture pantheo…

Ducktales The Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp (Disney Movietoons Presents) [VHS]

$9.99

Another of Disney’s efforts to create a quickie animated feature film out of one of its daily TV shows, this one plays like a low-rent reworking of Aladdin. Still, with Scrooge McDuck (voiced by Alan Young) and nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, there’s fun to be had. And that includes the genie (voiced by comic Rip Taylor) and the villains voiced by Christopher Lloyd and Richard Libertini. The plot …
